Currently, I am writing a book on Influence and Motivation. In this journey of learning more about motivation and influence, I have come across some great facts and knowledge that I would never get if I hadn’t thought of starting to write the book.

Because I feel like you are an integral part of this universe and yourself, I would like to share some of my learnings.

When I am writing this article, one sound of a person is constantly coming, I am saying, “Fuck You! Why are you shouting out so loud, Just Fuck Off!!! I will kick you.” Sounds funny! But that’s what I am currently feeling. And this little sound of a little poor man (I don’t know if that person is rich or poor, I am just referencing) is constantly demotivating me to write this article.

Brother Of Motivation

The brother of Motivation is DEMOTIVATION. Where there is Motivation, most probably there will be demotivation lying around. So, as much challenging bringing motivation is, that much challenging is to keep motivation far from demotivation.

So, rather than using tools like, motivational speeches, quotes, etc. to bring motivation, or using tools like, uninstalling social media, sitting away from people who demotivate you, it is always better to understand WHAT ACTUALLY MOTIVATION IS so that you can then see there is always a motivation inside you.

Definition Of Motivation

According to WIKIPEDIA, “Motivation is the experience of desire which has both an objective aspect and an internal or subjective aspect.”

I agree 110% with this definition. See, in this definition, there is mentioned about two aspects i.e. Subjective and Objective. Let’s discuss that once.

Aspects Of Motivation

Mostly termed as, “Types Of Motivation”, I would like to rephrase it to, “Aspects Of Motivation”. Because types are where two things are separated. But these are aspects where it’s okay to have any of them or both of them.

  1. Internal Motivation
  2. External Motivation

Internal Motivation

Internal Motivation is where you don’t know what is pushing you to do certain work but still, you are doing. Some examples of internal motivation are Self-Satisfaction, Self-Learning, Impact, etc.

External Motivation

External Motivation is where you have a certain goal or agenda that is pushing you to do a task. Some examples of external motivation are Money, People, Physical Objects, etc.

People sometimes misconceive and think, having external motivation is bad. It’s not true. In fact, without that, a person would have difficulty in getting the motivation at the initial phase.

Actually, both internal and external motivation is integral. They are like two sides of a coin. Let me give you an example.

Task: Writing This Article

Internal Motivation: I can share my knowledge and impact others.

External Motivation: I can get more following so that I can build a legacy in my other works.

Do you think, my external motivation is bad? Not at all. So, there should be a synergy between internal motivation and external motivation for them to help you motivate in the long term.

So, it’s not about what is good and what is bad, it’s all about what works for you.

10 Phases Of Motivation

After analyzing the work history of myself, this is how a person’s motivation flow with the time being.

Phase 1: External Factors Motivate You And Make You Think About A Certain Task

Phase 2: You Do Certain Task and Achieve Some Level Of Success

Phase 3: Your Motivation Level Goes To Neutral

Phase 4: Your Motivation Goes Nill

Phase 5: You Get Burn Out

Phase 6: Internal Motivation Makes You Sometimes Think About What You Wanted

Phase 7: You Want To Change, But You Can’t

Phase 8: You Try Different Things, Some Fails, Some Succeeds

Phase 9: Your Brain Creates A System With The Failure and Success

Phase 10: MOTIVATION BECOMES LONG TERM

This is how a person’s workflow is affected by motivation. See if you don’t have the external motivation, it will be difficult to start something. Now, if you are in a situation where you need to start something, try watching motivational videos, try watching rich people living in a yacht, and other external things. Then when you get into the stream, try building a purpose of what you are doing. So, you won’t stop after PHASE 5.

My Example

I would like to give you an example as an endnote to this article.

I was browsing through my social media, I found someone who became millionaire writing just a book. Then I also thought I also need a MILLION BUCKS. [Phase 1]

Then I started writing my first chapter and named it, “Installing Python”. Then I kept on writing. After 20 days, I completed writing up to Chapter 5. [Phase 2]

Then I felt complacent. I said to myself, “For what am I writing this? What The Fuck? Seriously, Kovid?? You are just wasting your time.” Still, I was writing, but maybe 1 Page a day. [Phase 3]

After that, slowly, I began to stop writing. I had other works come in between and I had forgotten what I was doing. Honestly, I had forgotten that MILLION BUCKS at this time point. [Phase 4]

But suddenly, when I realized, I was watching a South Indian Movie. LOL!! I was on my fucking couch watching YouTube and Netflix. I felt, “Seriously, Kovid? This is what you are meant to do??” And I was replying to myself, “I am feeling good. I don’t want to bother my comfort.” [Phase 5]

After someday watching Netflix, I suddenly remembered that I had to make people aware of Python Programming. [Phase 6]

I tried to wake up from my couch and start writing the book, but I was not being able to get out of my fuckin’ couch. [Phase 7]

I then tried to take a piece of paper, Write Down My Goals….Failed

I tried to start writing at least the chapter…. Succeeded but Failed

I tried to see some other books for inspiration…. Succeeded

I wrote again….Failed [Phase 8]

So, after some days, my brain was finally able to create a system. In this system, I can now work on it. [Phase 9]

Now, I have my control over the motivation to write something. Because now I know what works for me and whatnot. [Phase 10]

Ending The Conversation

I would say 1 sentence at the end and that is, Find What Works For You!!!! Always Keep Learning!!!
